Mermaid Gin from The Isle Of Wight Distillery

About the product:

Rooted in the natural landscape of the unique Isle Of Wight island you will find the Isle of Wight’s first and only distillery. Founders Xavier and Conrad and their small team distil spirits shaped by the stunning surroundings, and the unique character of the island. Doing things differently, minimising waste, using ethically sourced and often local ingredients to craft a range of smooth, complex spirits.

As part of the distillery's commitment to sustainability, conservation and a circular economy, they are proactive in helping to protect the island’s marine environment. They have adopted a progressive and sustainable approach - gradually eliminating plastic from their packaging and supply chains, while using biodegradable materials wherever possible.

Inspired by the island's setting, they use ethically sourced and local natural ingredients. Rock Samphire is foraged from the shoreline, Boadicea hops are harvested from Ventnor Botanic Gardens and elderflower is handpicked from local fields, while strawberries are grown in the lush and sun-soaked Arreton Valley.

Slow distillation and local, sustainably sourced ingredients combine to craft a pure and perfectly blended range of spirits. Working with column stills, the distillation process is tightly controlled, capturing only the ‘hearts’ of each batch – the sweet spot of any distillation – for a signature smooth delivery.

Hand-crafted on the Isle of Wight using ten ethically sourced botanicals, Mermaid Gin delivers a smooth yet complex blend of fresh organic lemon zest and peppery grains of paradise, with a hint of sea air from locally foraged, fragrant rock samphire. A refreshing and invigorating serve, for the free-spirited.

Our Verdict

We simply have to begin with the stunningly beautiful bottle that brings you Mermaid Gin... It may well look beautiful on screen but it really is even more beautiful in real life.  Before even opening the bottle you will find yourself planning what you are going to do with this work of art afterwards... Personally I already have plans for an led bottle stop cork in the top so it will be beautifully lit on my obligatory lockdown built garden bar!!

I had big expectations of a really tasty drink from the appearance of the bottle and I am pleased to say it didn't disappoint.

I'm not sure why but I expected it to be fruity and sweet but in fact it has a very distinctive taste...  It does indeed have a lovely crisp sweet taste, however the sweetness comes more from the zesty lemon with hints of liqourice and something in the taste really does take your mind to the seaside...

This is a lovely distinctive flavour, definitely a talking point from a taste and appearance point.

I love how the distillery are striving to use sustainable materials and be as environmentally friendly as possible.  If you happen to live on the beautiful Isle Of Wight (sadly we are a long way from those beautiful shores here in Shropshire) you can even return your bottle to the distillery to be sterilised, recycled and reused and bag yourself a discount on another bottle for your trouble.  If I'm honest though, I can think of so many ways to personally re use this beautiful bottle right here at home... I just need the a bottle of the pink Mermaid Gin now to sit beautifully next to it.
